EECS Professors David Blaauw and Dennis Sylvester, along with EECS graduate students Daeyeon Kim and Yoonmyung Lee and a team of researchers at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center, have received the Best Paper Award at the International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design(ISLPED) conference in San Francisco.

The ISLPED is the premier forum for presentation of recent advances in all aspects of low power design and technologies, ranging from process and circuit technologies, to simulation and synthesis tools, to system level design and optimization.

The paper, “Low Power Circuit Design Based on Heterojunction Tunneling Transistors (HETTs),”explores logic and memory circuit topologies for a new type of transistor in development at IBM. These topologies use a new mode of conducting current, called tunneling, to create much better turn-on characteristics than the conventional transistors in use today in all modern electronics.
